Long Day’s Journey Into Night Tickets

Richard Eyre’s production of Long Day’s Journey into Night which opened at Bristol Old Vic in 2016, has transferred to Wyndham's Theatre until April 2018, when it will go on tour around the UK.

There’s a maudlin intensity to Eugene O’Neill’s New England classic. Did anyone ever better layer sorrow, fear, jealousy and resentment, smashing family members together like accelerated atoms? This is as rounded a brood and detailed a psychological portrait as one could hope for on stage. O’Neill’s admiration for Shakespeare, who was no slouch when it came to characters rich in ambiguity and prisoners of their personalities (both heroes and villains), is evident in the rasping form of retired stage actor, James Tyrone – the play’s embattled patriarch, whose ambition, born of immigrant poverty, has provided wealth and domestic security while decimating his family’s happiness.

A Long Day’s Journey into Night is a mid-20^th century classic. Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winning Eugene O’Neill delved deep into his personal and family life for what is considered to be his greatest work. The play wasn’t published until 15 years after it was it was first written. O’Neill originally expressed the wish that it not be published until 20 years until after his death. This wish was ignored by his widow and it received publication a year after he passed away.

Writers, especially new writers, are often told write what you know, which must have been  Eugene O’Neill’s motto. The Irish-born American playwright of Long Day’s Journey Into Night clearly had no compunction about heavily mining his life experiences and those of his parents, as the play is very autobiographical. The quadruple Pulitzer Prize winning playwright doesn’t spare himself or any of the protagonists who are easily identified as his mother, father, a brother, himself, his son and wife. So why did he instruct his second wife not to allow it to be performed for 25 years after his death?

The award winning Jermyn Street Theatre’s growing reputation for rediscovering and producing lost works by the world’s greatest playwrights steps up a level this Summer with the UK premiere of Henrik Ibsen’s third play from 10th July to 4th August, the magical and dreamlike St John’s Night directed by Anthony Biggs.  The cast includes Sara Crowe, Louise Calf and Isla Carter.

The Pulitzer prize winning play, Long Days Journey Into Night stars David Suchet and Laurie Metcalf for a limited season only until 18th August at the Apollo Theatre.
